Deaf Nursery

 

 


The renowned ENT surgeon and Ex – Rtn. Dr. M. N. Gogate, Rtn. Manohar Miraje and Late Dr. Bhaiyasaheb Gune thought of an innovative idea of starting a nursery school for children with hearing impairment. Their vision came into existence  in a rented space with 1 deaf child and 1 trained teacher. Slowly but steadily, the school reached today’s stage.

Current Status

  1. Now, there are around 50 -55 students every year having benefit of language and speech development. Children from age of 6 months to 6 years are given admission.
  2. A staff of 10 trained, experienced teachers along with honorary assistant volunteers give training to these children.
  3. The class rooms are well – equipped with necessary machines and educational material.
  4. Children use BTE (Behind the Ear) hearing aids which are digital and with latest technology.
  5. Rotary samaj seva Kendra is a registered charitable trust of Rotary club of Kolhapur. This Rotary Karnabadhir Shishu vidyalaya i.e. Nursery for Deaf children is run very efficiently by this trust in their own premises.

Featurs

  1. The remarkable feature is that the tests for hearing impairment like OAE and BERA along with PTA ( Pure Tone Audiometry) are done under one roof.
  2. Once the hearing loss is confirmed, suitable hearing aids are given. The parents get good guidance as well as counseling for the betterment of their child’s future.In India still there is not awareness about child’s hearing loss. Rotary Samaj Seva Kendra is taking a lead to do so by testing new born children with OAE equipment which is mobile.
  3. The trust gives considerable concession to parents with lower socio – economic status while purchasing hearing aids.
  4. Parent Infant Programme (PIP) is under taken for children up to 3 years, which is the most critical period of child’s over all development.
  5. Deaf children up to 6 yrs. of age are given help to join regular school.Every year 5-7 children take a leap in their life to join regular school.
  6. Parents coming from lower social economic class are helped with concession in school fees. Their conveyance expenses are partly taken care of.
  7. Medical camps are organized every year by specialized persons.
  8. Extracurricular activities like picnics, various competitions and Gathering are organized for all round personality development of deaf child.
  9. Parent Training Programme is conducted every year by experts in this field.
  10. Workshop and CRE programmes for upgrading knowledge of teachers are counducted by experts in this field.
